It Had To Be You is an exhibition of recent works by Judith Brotman, which includes mixed media installations, individual works on paper, and singing videos. For material to transform in her work, Brotman looks to stories ranging from The Zohar, an esoteric 13th century Kabbalistic text, to personal narratives shared by friends, family, and others with whom she has had a close connection. Both the original stories and her resulting work run the gamut of emotions: dark, darkly comedic, blissfully ecstatic, and all the spaces to be found in between. Brotman posits that shared stories – oral, written, and sung – carry with them the possibility of healing in the complex and vulnerable space that sits between the listener/reader and the storyteller. She sees that space as a possible occasion for empathy to occur.
Selected to be shown with Brotman’s new works are several pieces chosen from Scott Hunter’s personal contemporary art collection, that engage with and accentuate the relationships that are activated within the space between the viewer and the artists’ works. These broaden and extend the stories being told. This exhibitions is organized by Matt Morris, Eric Ruschman, Andre Marin, and Tom Burtonwood
Accompanying work from the Hunter collection by Jeroen Nelemans, Matt Morris, Vaginal Davis, Alex Frost-Calhoun, and Matan Golan
