The Black Speculative Arts Movement, aka BSAM, is a network of creatives, intellectuals, and artists representing different positions or basis of inquiry including: Afrofuturism, Astro Blackness, Afro-Surrealism,Ethno Gothic, Black Digital Humanities, Black (Afro-future female or African Centered) Science Fiction, The Black Fantastic, Magical Realism, and The Esoteric. Although these positions may be incompatible in some instances they overlap around the term speculative and design; and interact around the nexus of technology and ethics.BSAM provides space for a re-imagining of a better sociopolitical and cultural future, a liberated future for Black people and all historically oppressed; through creative expression grounded in African influence and discussions of technology and philosophy, address contemporary issues related to globalization, climate change, immigration, and technology.

BSAM is making its first appearance in Chicago in partnership with the Chicago State University Gwendolyn Brooks Library.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

No. But, ID is required to enter the Library.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Chicago State University is located at 9501 S. King Dr., at the 95th Street intersection, and is easily accessible by public transportation and driving.

Parking: Visitors may park on campus in any of the 7 campus parking lots in non-reserved spaces. The Library (newly renamed Gwendolyn Brooks Library, formerly New Academic Library) is west of and closest to Lot A1, which is near the 95th Street entrance (at St Lawrence and 95th). Please note that there is a $5.00 daily parking rate applicable to all visitors and vendors on campus. Additionally, there is off-campus street parking along 95th St. and Martin Luther King Dr.
Public Transportation: The # 3 (King Drive) and the #4 (Cottage Grove), both stop directly on campus at the CTA Bus Shelter off of 95th St. near St. Lawrence (in turn-around). The bus shelter is northeast of the library in close proximity. Additionally, the #95 stops at the St. Lawrence intersection, just north of the Library.
Ride Share Services: (Lyft, Uber, etc.) can drop visitors off near the bus shelter by the service road/walking path, which is between the shelter (on the left) and the Library (on the right).
The front entrance of the library is diagonally across, northwest of the Cordell Reed Student Union building.
