A quilt is a window, a window is a quilt, too is a solo exhibition of new works by fiber artist and
sculptor micah dillman.
micah has found the arrows of life pointing any which way. Navigating a wayward sense of self has left them searching for the known amongst the chaos of all of the other. This chaos is echoed in the process of medically transitioning while recently unearthing a lifetime of lies surrounding the artist’s family, patriarchal father, and recontextualised childhood experiences. In their quest, micah returns to an object originally used to learn about direction, the ethics of sharing, and intuitive decision making: the toy car.
micah uses many bits and skill sets they have acquired throughout their years as a maker to produce a series of tiny car sculptures, each one isolating a moment or feeling in their lifetime. A quilted map serves as a window into understanding the geography of their heart as well as their hometown of Dubuque, IA. An honest approach to art making and storytelling keeps micah grounded throughout this time of their life and resists the urge to detach when staring in the face of such traumas.
