Join us for the second public discussion for Two Histories of the World.

Offering different perspectives on this experimental exhibition, various people will share their impressions of visiting the unusual (and often overwhelming) factory site where the show first took place. Or if you saw the first show yourself and spent time at the William H. Cooper factory, please join the conversation and share your own experiences there.

Two Histories of the World is a multiyear exhibition project shaped in collaboration with the participating artists. It was first developed and presented in 2011 at a large factory building on Chicago’s west side. A second version of the show, now at Hyde Park Art Center, features all new works, as the artists re-imagine their original site-specific projects, draw on memories of the place (which was demolished last spring), and translate their experiences there for an audience that may not have seen the first show.

Central to this larger project are a series of discussions in the gallery during the run of the second exhibition. Each of these conversations draws out additional perspectives and personal narratives about visiting the original location—an immense building in a state of disrepair, with large rooms full of objects and salvaged materials—and seeking out artworks in this distinctive and sometimes deeply affecting context.
