Push Pull: A Live Performance by The Seldoms in collaboration with Faheem Majeed
Join us for an evening live performance of Push Pull by The Seldoms dance company member Damon Green. This short performance, choreographed by Artistic Director Carrie Hanson, activates Faheem Majeed’s rubbing of the Southside Community Art Center as part of his Hyde Park Art Center Exhibition, Planting and Maintaining a Perennial Garden: Shroud. Push Pull is a 20 minute video performance recorded in the New Bauhaus designed gallery of the South Side Community Art Center that will be playing on the facade of the Hyde Park Art Center during the duration of the exhibition.
In Push Pull, performer Damon Green unfurls, bundles, and carries the full weight of a living historic institution, embodied in Faheem Majeed’s 34 x 42 foot graphite rubbing on muslin of the historic Bronzeville landmark, South Side Community Art Center. Both the live performance and its companion short dance film are inspired by Majeed’s own earlier “Piano Push,” which references his tenure as SSCAC’s Director. Green’s formidable presence is on full display in this meditative, patient and determined solo that expresses labor, the acts of lifting up and holding on, histories, and accumulation.
