Convening – Three Days of Activation and Response

@ Chicago Cultural Center

78 E Washington St, Chicago, IL 60602

Opening Thursday, June 13th, from 10AM - 12PM

On view through Saturday, June 15th

“…[performance] can give us time differently, dancing durations of experience in excess of any notion of the in-the-moment we too often cling to.” (Erin Manning)

In the closing phase of the exhibition a three-day workshop and series of public conversations will be held in the Sidney R. Yates Gallery to further respond to the context of the exhibition, goat island archive – we have discovered the performance by making it. The approaches to exhibiting the Goat Island Archive stem from the idea that the performances of Goat Island are missing, rather than being taken as a lack this was embraced as an opportunity to seek responses. From June 13-15 a public workshop hosted by the exhibition Curator Nicholas Lowe will explore the archival residues of Goat Island and the response works by the ten invited artists who contributed to this exhibition.

What is implied by the leftover of a performed event? What are the implications of the responses as archival excesses. The ‘convening’ workshop is open to the public and is offered as an additional opportunity for response to the ‘gestures of repair in the act’ that have been detected in the work of Goat Island. All workshop sessions are open to the public, participation is welcomed.
