Andy Paczos: The Eye and the Hand
Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1961, Paczos earned his graduate degree in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1985. He studied with artist Ted Halkin- a friend and colleague of Ed Paschke’s- who encouraged him to seek inspiration from his surroundings. Paintings of Chicago’s urban environment followed, including decrepit underpasses, cracked curbs and empty parking lots. Paczos was even the first visual artist in the Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA’s) history to be granted official permission to paint on a train platform.
Paczos paints outdoors, or en plein air, a French phrase typically associated with 19th century painters such as the Impressionists. Executed entirely onsite, weather, lighting and season vary the tone and texture of his industrial landscapes. Often Paczos even risks trespassing on private property in order to complete a painting.
