Julia Fish: [ drawings for ] Living Rooms and studies for Entry
@ Rhona Hoffman Gallery
118 N Peoria St, Chicago, IL 60607
On view through Friday, August 2nd
RHONA HOFFMAN GALLERY is pleased to present [ drawings for ] Living Rooms, an exhibition of new work by Julia Fish, as well as related studies from the artist’s earlier series, Entry.
[ drawings for ] Living Rooms consists of 10 drawings executed in gouache on paper. The drawings, Fish explains, were “developed from a set of pen and ink drawings based on the structural description and floor plan of the living area of my home. Each sheet articulates the specific interior room configuration and threshold space(s) to any adjoining room or passageway, oriented on the page as either north- or south-facing at a scale of 1:12 inches. … the drawings attempt to inscribe spatial, inhabited experience.”
[ drawings for ] Living Rooms follow a group of thirteen paintings and a sequence of drawings and related studies, collectively titled Entry, which Fish completed between 1997-2001. The studies for Entry further attest to the significance of the subject of ’home’ or ‘place’ to Fish’s work. This subject has served as the basis of her work since 1992.
Julia Fish was born in Oregon and has lived and worked in Chicago since 1985. Her paintings and drawings have been included in exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the MAK Center for Art and Architecture / Schindler House; the Martin-Gropius Bau, Berlinische Galerie, Berlin, Germany; Chicago Cultural Center; Terra Museum of American Art; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; among many others. Her work has been presented in seventeen one-person exhibitions since 1980, and was the subject of a ten-year survey exhibition at The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago in 1996. She received a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award in 1991, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Painting in 1993, the Cal Arts / Alpert and Ucross Residency Prize in 2001, and has been granted research and travel awards from the University of Illinois at Chicago where she is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Art and Design.
