The Chicago Artists Coalition is proud to present Dicker, Lurk & Skew, a multimedia HATCH Projects exhibition of new works by Ali Aschman, LeRoy Bach, and Hyounsang Yoo.
Popular culture often reinforces existing modes of conventional thought. Grappling with cavalier attitudes towards power and privilege, this exhibition takes a speculative view of the functional/dysfunctional in social constructs. Dicker, Lurk & Skew critically reflects on hyper-masculinity, musical aesthetics, and mass-produced global consumerism.
Ali Aschman creates handmade worlds by combining drawing, animation, printmaking, and sculptural processes. Her “Flower Girls” series considers the historical and natural representations of women’s bodies as metaphors for an idealized femininity. Aschman’s complex installations take cue from murder ballads or lyrical narratives that romanticize femicide.
LeRoy Bach performs live music that is site-responsive to develop architectonic musical poetics. He navigates social expectations as a working musician by renegotiating sound, space, and responsibilities of the performer and audience. Bach offers us droning that commands active listening and improv as an intuitive language. The visibility and physicality of a live, public performance become means of rekindling an intimate rapport between the musician and their audience. Being connected, intentional, and present are the impetus for the work.
Hyounsang Yoo explores relationships between history and the production of idealized realities using photography, video, installation, and sculpture. Yoo references image production and memory as strategies for recontextualizing cultural histories and tracing sociopolitical landscapes of globalized markets.
Dicker, Lurk, and Skew is curated by Sadie Woods.
