Neither Here Nor There is a duo-exhibition featuring Chicago-based textile artists Prisma Andrade and Cherin Kim who materially explore their cultural identities as they exist outside of their original cultural context. Both artists are from two vastly different cultural backgrounds—Andrade is of Hispanic and Latin American descent while Kim is of Korean descent and Japanese-born—but together they find connection through their shared experience as “third culture” individuals who grew up outside of their parents’ cultural origins. As third culture children, the artists understand immigration as an experience that disrupts the transmission of family histories, leaving subsequent generations to piece together the fragments of what was left behind. Andrade recreates archival images and artworks by her family members as a ritual act to honor and learn from her ancestors, while also critiquing gender roles within her family and art and craft. Kim translates historical photographs and traditional Korean folk art into textile portraits to recollect her personal and cultural history. Together, through textile applications of weaving, dyework, and stitch, Andrade and Kim craft together the remnants of their familial archives to create a space for their stories in the present—a place that is neither here nor there, but is in the now.
