You are young. You dive into the shallow part of your friend’s pool and scrape your palms on the concrete. Never again will you dive into a pool the same way, and yet, you will never not relive that initial dive during each and every subsequent plunge. You are cold because the water is evaporating. The chlorine is doing something else.
First Look At A Long Time considers the personal at the moment when the minute is projected onto the collective accumulation of future minutes. There is a back-and-forth with the self: Is this instance indicative of the duration? Is this my future? The future is now and forever. It has left you here to decide. The future is never coming back to this moment, and yet, it has never left this moment. It is a façade you have built in a minute, but will continue to inhabit for the rest of your life.
The artists in this exhibition are engaging with the lasting effect of a moment. This is the point when the moment becomes momentous. The present before, during, and after it is opened.
