Jill Birschbach / Ken Minami: Scapes
@ Lillstreet Art Center
4401 N Ravenswood Ave, Chicago, IL 60640
Opening Friday, October 17th, from 5PM - 8PM
Jill Birschbach is inspired by the factory tours, power plants, and industrial landscapes of her childhood. She creates sculptures glazed with crusty, bumpy and peeling surfaces to emphasize the grittiness. The effect is both beauty and repulsion.
The sculptures frequently have exposed sections that reveal a fragile internal scaffolding—an architectural cutaway that underscores the instability and unsettling foundation of the structure.
Ken Minami attempts to create a dream-like urban landscape of strangers waiting for a train or bus, walking by restaurant windows and peering in, and or silently meditating on their own lives in the transition period between destinations .The implied emotion of these very brief moments is what he strives for. The places in the paintings are based on real places but he eliminates, invents and adds architectural elements to enhance my compositional and narrative objectives.
