Sawhorse is pleased to present Far Down the Phantom Air, an exhibition by Chicago-based artists Jane Leipold and Alex Adkinson. Composed of industrial window grates, enigmatic impressions of water and sky, and gauzy images drawn from a fragmented fossil record, the works presented speak to the limits of perception, barriers of time, and failures of understanding.
Collapsing epochs of natural and personal history, the compositions gesture towards a shaky revelation that nonetheless slips through our fingers. If we could only relive the day we saw the ripple on the pond, if we could reach out and hold the bones, perhaps we could understand something. But what Leipold’s blurry dinosaurs and subterranean vignettes share with Adkinson’s wrought-iron latices is a denial of access: the observer is kept at a remove, looking through at a world glimpsed but never fully grasped.
