“No me parezco a nadie” (I Don’t Look Like Anyone Else) is an exhibit of Alex Velázquez Brightbill’s relief prints, handmade books, and mixed media work. Inspired by the music-filled memories of her Mexican upbringing, this exhibit is dedicated to her grandfather, Abel Negrete, who turns 84 this year.
“The title of this exhibit, “No me parezco a nadie” (“I don’t look like anyone else”), is borrowed from a Pedro Infante song titled “Yo soy quien soy” (“I am who I am”). The unapologetic but also humorous lyrics describe a person who gets along better with animals than with humans – something that many of us can relate to at times. The statement “no me parezco a nadie” also resonates deeply with me as an immigrant. I look different, I come from a different place, and I am who I am.
