∆ Norman W. Long

Norman W. Long (b. 1973, Chicago, IL) is a sound artist/designer/composer based in Chicago, IL. His current work focuses on sound art production within the larger context of landscape. He has exhibited and/or performed in galleries in Chicago, Ithaca, New York, London, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The processes involved in his practice lie within the area of field recording, electro-acoustic composition and dub technique. His art/studio practice involves gardening, collecting, performing and recording to create, objects, environments, situations in which the artist and audience are engaged in a dialogue about memory, space, value, silence and the invisible. It is his desire that his practice offers us a space to consider our relationship to sound via social, ecological structures, our interiority and to affirm our existence.

∆ Steve Fors

Steve Fors, US citizen and permanent Swiss-resident since 2016, is a composer of intra-genre experimental music. Since 2004, he has explored musique concrete, drone, noise, experimental ambient, and neo-classical forms composing/performing in Chicago’s and New York’s experimental underground music scene. He’s released eight solo and collaborative project albums in the past 15 years as „The Golden Sores“ (Drone Cowboy / Bloodlust, Chicago), „Aeronaut“ (Fabrica Records, New York / Cruel Bones, Zürich), and „Shovels Beat The Sun“ (BITROT, New York / Sennfeld, Germany

/ Teheran). His current project’s debut album, “it’s nothing, but still”—produced by Siavash Amini and released on the Swiss-based Hallow Ground imprint last year—garnered critical acclaim despite its limited physical release.

Fors continues to explore the physicality of sound through layered cello, guitar, voice, processed tape loops, field recordings, and electronics. Building on the work of such luminaries as Tim Hecker, Lawrence English, and Rafael Anton Irisarri, his approach to sonic maximalism brings with it both a wistful melancholy and raw power. For this proposed project, he will add an exploration of microtonality and multi-channel performance to the mix; reinforcing his interest in a heightened sensorial approach.

Fors has a Master’s degree in Installation/Sculpture from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Bachelor of Arts in Printmaking from Grinnell College. Recent works include a 60-minute sound installation entitled “Manufactured Obsolescence” at Syndicate (Takamata, Japan), and local performances at Helsinki Klub, Umbo, and Kunstraum Walcheturm.

∆ post doom romance

What Mykel Boyd and seah (Chelsea Heikes) have in common when forming their collaborative artist group, post doom romance, is a keen eye and ear for textures. In both sound and image, we have been solo artists working both in the music industry and the fine arts world. Together, producing sound, video, and still image compositions that are sensitively layered and textural. Our aesthetic is such that we do not heavy-handedly depict. Rather, we ruminate together in the feeling space of both literary and physical spaces, building our aural and visual language through subtle layering of manipulated field recordings. Post doom romance will be performing pieces from their recent release titled “prairie transmissions”.
