Thru-Lines

@ 65GRAND

1369 West Grand Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60642

Opening Friday, July 19th, from 6PM - 9PM

On view through Saturday, August 3rd

65GRAND is pleased to present Thru-Lines, a summer group exhibition. The collection of work on view-related formally, conceptually and materially-traces a line through the gallery’s history.

65GRAND has always been about allowing artists to present work they wouldn’t otherwise be able to. Taking risks and allowing for experimentation are encouraged. Philip von Zweck removes the building’s disused façade and installs it in the gallery; Jerome Acks shows delicate plaster casts of vinyl record molds on metal shelving units; Erik Wenzel’s homage to Robert Ryman’s The Elliot Room (Charter Series) is infused with a kitsch Dada dance party vibe by The KLF’s The White Room blaring from unseen speakers.

That is one history of the gallery, but relevant too are the discrete works from such exhibitions. Or works who’ve never quite seen the light of day. Like the B-sides and singles off a classic album, Thru-Lines presents rarities and guilty pleasures from the gallery’s history. Thru-Lines is an incomplete and partial history of the exhibitions and artists who’ve shown with 65GRAND over the years.

Artists include: Jerome Acks, Harold Boyd, You-Ni Chae, John Cichon, David Corbett, Heather Guertin, Samantha Jaffe, Daniel Johnson, Bob Jones, Jasmine Justice, Nicholas Knight, Brian Kapernekas, David Leggett, John Lyon, Melissa Oresky, Ian Pedigo, Gary Rattigan, jon.satrom, William Staples, Philip von Zweck, and Erik Wenzel.

Summer is about taking a break and recharging the batteries. Sharing refreshing drinks with friends and enjoying the long evenings, one gets poetic. Perhaps the last track off Kayne West’s summer blockbuster Yeezus says it best:

I know you’re tired of lovin’,
Of lovin’
With nobody to love.
Nobody, nobody.

So just grab somebody
No leavin’ this party
With nobody to love.
Nobody, nobody.
