The pollen-packed wind invades your sinuses as you cruise along the interstate on a muggy day with your windows down to compensate for your broken AC. Corn to the left, beans on the right, an International Harvester in front of you going 40 under the speed limit. Glancing into your rearview mirror, a lifted black Ford Super Duty appears one second, and is riding your ass the next. You lock eyes with the driver through his wraparound Oakleys as he finishes a shooter of Fireball. The truck pivots into the left lane and flies past you, hitting a curb on the way into the parking lot of the only bar in town, leaving you to inhale a fat rip of diesel smog. As the dust clears, and you wipe away your tears, you make out the license plate–”R3TIRED”.
There’s no place like home, besides, of course, the thousands of carbon copy midwestern small towns that are, in fact, just like home. CORN BRED reanimates the current midwestern zeitgeist–from bucolic corn fields and Big Green Tractors, to gaudy gas station souvenirs and country music anthems. The cyclical and familiar nature of the small town lifestyle, and the citizens who put down roots and fester in it, are repositioned as phenomena worthy of being chewed on and spit back out–only to still be finding kernels stuck deep between your teeth years later.
