Abbey LaCroix: Phototaxis
@ 4th Ward Project Space
5338 S Kimbark Ave, Chicago, IL 60615
Opening Sunday, April 28th, from 4PM - 7PM
On view through Sunday, June 2nd
Abbey LaCroix’s first one-person exhibition, Phototaxis, signs, signals, and emotes childhood’s innocence alongside an adult world of taboos and grieving. She paints portals and conjures vibrations that make good on her ambitious project to locate energy circuits that give authentic access to the soul—basking in melancholic light.
LaCroix’s paintings are crafted to move one’s eyes up, down, across, backward and forward in space and in time. She employs a symmetry of familiar and unfamiliar forms that slide between flat ornament, abstract objects, light fragments, and the feminine.
LaCroix shows how a painting might emit light, and she also shows us how to make a dim light shine brightly. Ultimately, LaCroix’s forms takes us to a world without contradictions, only nuances.
Abbey LaCroix was born in Suamico, Wisconsin. She lives and works in Chicago, IL. She completed her BFA in Studio Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2023.
