The Evanston Art Center (EAC) is excited to welcome the public to an exhibition featuring works by artists Paul Verburg and Jack Demuth.

Paul Verburg

Paul VerBurg is a full time artist and painter, trained in drawing and painting at The Art Institute of Chicago (BFA), and Art Center College of Design. A recent transplant from Arizona, he now lives in Okemos, Michigan.

Experimentation with media and blending of genres began for him in the 1980’s. The majority of his work now focuses on the abstract qualities found in the physical world and translating them into drawings and paintings. His current studio practice includes oil on canvas painting, pen and ink / mixed media drawing and sculptural/assemblage work.

Jack Demuth

Born in an Iowa farm community, Jack Demuth excelled in art throughout his early years, but was drafted into service in Vietnam flying combat missions as a helicopter gunner shortly after his high school graduation. Upon returning to the US, Jack traveled for a year throughout the Western United States and attended Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa California, where he majored in fine art with an emphasis on drawing, photography and surfing.

Following graduation, Jack moved to New York City to work as a photographer’s assistant and attend evening classes at the School of Visual Arts. While living in New York he created a photo documentary that became a children’s book about a police horse that patrolled the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan. City Horse was published by Dodd Mead and Co, and was favorably reviewed in the New York Times children’s book section.

In 1977, Jack moved to Chicago to begin his professional career as an educational publishing photographer. He is best known for his photo documentary work, which includes three children’s books, one of which won the Midland authors Best Children’s Book award.

Jack then retired and lived in Chicago with his wife Jean, dog Moses and two cats. In his art, he continues exploring themes with psychological implications through his wood sculpture and works on paper.

Jack sadly passed in August of 2022. His wife Jean Fujita had kindly allowed the EAC to continue with his scheduled exhibition.
