he First Nations Film and Video Festival at the Newberry, featuring films by Native American directors, continues Saturday, December 8, with screenings of “Barking Water” and “Woman Who Returns.” Both films will be illuminated by commentary from FNFVF Director Ernest Whiteman, followed by a Q&A with the audience.
Free to attend with advance registration, the festival will be held the second Saturday of every month for the next several months. Subsequent dates include January 12, February 9, March 9, April 13, and May 11.
“Barking Water,” Directed by Sterlin Harjo
Hoping to see his daughter and grandchild, a terminally ill man (Richard Ray Whitman) embarks on a road trip with his former lover (Casey Camp-Horinek). Barking water is story of love, family, and a final journey home.

“I came from two different worlds and I had been disconnected from my roots for so long that I let other people’s opinions define my identity. And that hurt.”
