Great Ideas of Humanity: Out of the Container
@ Chicago Design Museum
108 N State St, Fl 3rd, Chicago, IL 60602
Opening Friday, April 20th, from 6PM - 9PM
On view through Saturday, August 18th
It is essential to celebrate and share the ideas that unite us, inspire us, and caution us; to consider ideas that transcend our individual worldviews and establish a common ground that binds us. A reimagining of Container Corporation of America’s stunning advertising campaign, Great Ideas of Western Man, Great Ideas of Humanity: Out of the Container highlights a broad spectrum of human thought and reminds us that sometimes, looking to the past helps to comprehend the present.
Come celebrate the Great Ideas project’s first installation in the ChiDM gallery and the work of designers and artists from around the world. With special help from Cards Against Humanity, get the chance to answer “What makes a great idea?” for yourself. See what CPS students in the 826CHI creative writing program think a great idea is. Talk to your neighbors and come up with the next great idea to make the world a better place. Be inspired!
Great Ideas of Humanity: Out of the Container is made possible by support from Cushing, Mohawk, Classic Color, and an anonymous donor.
As a special component to the exhibition, nine of the posters will reflect the quotes of distinguished Chicagoans such as Ida B. Wells, Buckminster Fuller, and László Moholy-Nagy, and feature designs by Chicagoans, including Jason Pickleman, Jilly Simons, and Carol Ross Barney. This grouping is presented in partnership with Art Design Chicago, a citywide celebration of Chicago’s art and design history through more than 25 exhibitions, as well as tours, talks, and special events in 2018. The grouping is funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art and The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation.
