Tracie Hayes: Cerebral Sediment

@ Apparatus Projects

2639 W Ainslie St, Chicago, IL 60625

Opening Saturday, March 17th, from 3PM - 6PM

On view through Saturday, April 14th

In an exhibition of new work, Tracie Hayes draws from her experiences moving between landscapes as both an artist and scientist. Engaging with Robert Smithson’s idea of site-as-consciousness, she collects data from her surroundings through the repetitive motions of knitting stitches and rows. These knitted fragments, acting as fossils of the location they were created and the gestures that formed them, collectively become a dataset of experience. In a diagrammatic installation, they form patterns of shape, color, and texture while simultaneously softening the perceived hardness of data analysis and presentation.

Tracie Hayes is an artist from Charlotte, NC who recently moved to Chicago. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BA in art and a BS in biology. She’s a 2017-2018 FIELD/WORK resident at the Chicago Artists Coalition and a research intern with the Echinacea Project at the Chicago Botanic Garden. She has shown her work at the John and June Allcott Gallery (Chapel Hill) and the Overlook Place (Chicago), among others.

Apparatus is open by appointment only. Text or call 219.241.6303 for entrance or email apparatusprojects.chi@gmail.com to set up a visit.
