Uncle Freddy’s Gallery in northwest Indiana represented highly imaginative, expressive and challenging art, made by artists from across the US and abroad in over 50 exhibitions over its 7-year tenure, 2002—2009. Co-owners Linda Dorman and Tom Torluemke still actively promote the artists they represented at the gallery have are pleased to announce an exhibit called Uncle Freddy’s All Stars featuring 3 of Uncle Freddy’s favorite artists, Em’rynn Artunian, Thomas Hagen and Billy Pozzo.
Em’rynn Artunian is an artist inspired by nature and the cycle of life in nature. His subtle, spiritual and passionate works are beautifully crafted and exhibit a raw and honest sincerity rarely seen in today’s contemporary art.
“127 times I’ve hoisted a pack with a weeks worth of food and set out to explore mountain, boreal or desert wilderness. Aligning myself with the wolverine way of travel (roam a fair distance daily, follow your instincts), I came to relish Wild Nature and the great freedom it provides. In this mode, I developed my creativity; first, through photography, then poetry, and mixed natural media and painting.
“As an artist, my goal is to produce work, which is accessible, yet intriguing. Many folks pass by a painting in a few seconds. With this current crop of paintings, a subrealism of sorts, I wish to pull the viewer close to the work, to hopefully prolong the study. Here you might find clues to an ecologic world where things are not always what they seem to be, and that is what is going on in nature.”
Self-taught artist Thomas Hagen is retired from a 30-year career on the railroad. Since he began painting, he has produced hundreds of drawings and paintings inspired by trains, experiences of military service and his dreams and nightmares. Hagen experiments with different styles in his work, which take the forms of realism surrealism and abstraction.
Billy Pozzo has been as an artist since graduating from Chicago’s American Academy of Art in 1993. Pozzo opened Artists, Inc. with partner Eric Osborne in 2000. Artists Inc. specializes in custom exhibits for clients that include the John G. Shedd Aquarium, Chicago Children’s Museum and Kenosha Public Museum. These exhibits include dioramas and environments, realistic life casts and large scale fiberglass sculptures. In addition to his full time job at Artists Inc., Bill spends most evenings at home in his studio creating personal artwork that explores human nature and physicality. His imaginative, humorous and dark subject matter takes many forms due to Pozzo’s incredible technical abilities.
