2nd Floor Rear 2016: We Are Here
@ Various locations
Opening Saturday, February 6th, from 9AM - 11PM
On view through Sunday, February 7th
2nd Floor Rear 2016: We Are Here is a meditation on the meaning(s) of being somewhere.
It’s 2nd Floor Rear’s 5th anniversary. To celebrate, we invited Pilsen to join our annual alternative space art-hop. This move got us thinking about the social and cultural politics of being and acting in a specific space. How do spatial relations and social relations arise together? How might places be binding and normative or potentially liberating? How are they shaped by the bodies they contain or exclude? How can a place be at once material and ideological, natural and fabricated, public and private, static and in flight? How can various socio-spatial forms and practices define or define the way we relate to a particular place in time, as well as to each other, our outlooks, and ourselves?
Join us on February 6 and 7, 2016 for exhibitions and workshops that examine textiles, garments, and the body’s relation to place; for installations about diaspora, displacement, the notions of home; for pseudo-mystical performances that reinvent communal rituals; for interventions in public spaces that call attention to their use–or misuse; for playful or pointed inquiries into the gendering (or queering) of shared spaces; for symbols of identity made edible; for places transformed into pillow forts, seed shops, greenhouses, soundscapes, queer bars or vintage porn palaces. Join us for film screenings and artists’ talks that meditate and speculate on Chicago’s varied creative actions and communities–what we are doing now, here.
