David Alekhuogie: A Thin Blue Line

The Chicago Artists Coalition is pleased to present the solo exhibition, A THIN BLUE LINE, by BOLT Resident, David Alekhuogie.
Colloquially, the title of the exhibition A THIN BLUE LINE refers to police forces and their responsibility to maintain order in the public space. The “thin blue line” is often rendered as an abstract form: a black space bisected by a blue line. The line is a symbol for the fragility of order in the public sphere. In this exhibition, the thin blue line is co-opted, deconstructed, and re-purposed, collapsing its perceived meaning into both abstract and literal forms, which reveal the line’s fiction and self-invention.
A THIN BLUE LINE investigates the intersections of public and private space, order and chaos, pack behavior, and the violence generated by collective trauma. Utilizing a range of media including photography, sculpture, sound, and video, the artist flattens historical and everyday records of violence, obsession, and desire in order to render them abstract.
Alekhuogie relates his practice to the aesthetics of hip-hop and jazz. Trained predominantly as a musician and a photographer, Alekhuogie marries conceptual strategies with aesthetic ones. He often uses conflict to unravel the binary between high-level abstraction and documentary description. Alekhuogie culls material from our collective memory, collaging and transposing it in real-time.
ARTIST BIO
David Alekhuogie (b. 1986, Los Angeles, CA) attended the University of California at Berkley where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, minoring in ethnomusicology before his transition to art-making. Alekhuogie began making photographs while working for various music publications, such as The Source, Complex, and The Fader. He has also photographed production materials for record labels, including Warp and Stones Throw. Alekhuogie’s art work has been exhibited internationally most recently at Fraenkel Gallery, Regen Projects, and Danziger Gallery. Alekhuogie’s artwork has also been included in publications such as Time, The New Yorker, and Vice. Alekhuogie received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, with a focus in Photography, in 2013 and received his MFA from Yale University in 2015. Alekhuogie’s multi-disciplinary practice is stems from photography and investigates memory, technology, media, and power.
