The Renaissance Society is pleased to present group exhibition Teen Paranormal Romance opening March 9 and running through April 13, 2014. Featuring sculpture, photography, and video, the exhibition will include work by Kathryn Andrews, Ed Atkins, Chris Bradley, Roe Ethridge, Guyton/Walker, Anna Gray & Ryan Wilson Paulsen, Anna K.E., and Jack Lavender. Teen Paranormal Romance is curated by Hamza Walker.
Within popular culture, expression given to adolescent drives have only intensified as the genre of Teen Romance has been distilled and repackaged as Teen Paranormal Romance. Twilight, The Hunger Games, True Blood, and the Divergent Trilogy are dystopic, psycho-sexual cyphers for the panoply of Obama-era ideological positions—from revanchist religious, economic, and sexual politics to Libertarian fever-dream apocalypticism. This exhibition samples artistic production in the wake of a zeitgeist that has rendered the unconscious a derelict playground home to weeds of surrealism.
Our current exhibition is a site-specific installation by Berlin-based artist Nora Schultz, parrottree-building for bigger than real, on view through February 23, 2014. This exhibition will conclude with a performance by the artist as well as an exhibition catalog release on the final day of the exhibition. Visit our website for more information.
Founded in 1915, the Renaissance Society is a non-collecting museum of contemporary art committed to supporting artists through the commissioning of new work and the production of criticism in exhibitions, publications, and interdisciplinary education programs. All programs are admission-free and open to the public.
The Renaissance Society is located on the campus of the University of Chicago, in Cobb Hall, on the fourth floor.
