Re: Abstraction
@ The Plan
610 N Albany Ave, Chicago, IL 60612
Opening Friday, November 6th, from 6PM - 10PM
On view through Sunday, December 6th
The driving force of abstract painting has historically been formal invention—a distinctly modernist idea that, many times over, has been proclaimed as a finite resource, destined to eventually run out and leave abstract artists with no choice but to declare painting itself a dead end. The introduction of new, interdisciplinary art forms in the latter half of the twentieth century—video, performance, installation, etc.—and the proportional de-emphasis of painting all but confirmed such a perspective until the dramatic resurgence of painting over the last two decades. The art historical significance of this resurgence remains unclear, whether it’s a consequence of the commercial demands of the art market or based on a newfound freedom to unapologetically return to past artistic approaches. The artists in “Re: Abstraction” create work within this unresolved landscape, each answering for themselves the question of what the meaning and purpose of abstraction is today.
Jessica Zawadowicz, Winnie Szu, and Matthew Herriot each arrive at abstraction from a different starting point—for Zawadowicz, a found material; for Szu, an experience of landscape; and for Herriot, a discovered relationship across works. Abstraction today is neither an avant-garde movement nor a shared quest between different artists; instead, each artist picks up the pieces of abstraction from history and passes them through their unique experiences and sensibilities. Zawadowicz, Szu, and Herriot are three examples of that contemporary process.
