Imagining Otherwise invites viewers to consider what a world built for those historically excluded from power might look and feel like, not as a distant utopia, but as a lived, felt, and continually negotiated reality.
Featuring the work of Reevah Agarwaal, Kaelyn Andrade, Alondra Ramos, Andrea Reyes, Luisa Tovar, Barrio Alchemist, and Carina Vargas-Núñez, the exhibition explores questions of autonomy, privacy, care, desire, and belonging. What might it mean to exist without apology? What if privacy were cultivated through care rather than imposed as a form of control? What if misbehavior could become a form of inquiry, a way of testing boundaries and imagining new possibilities?
Rooted in intimate, domestic, emotional, and social spaces, the artists in Imagining Otherwise envision alternative ways of living shaped by lived experience rather than imposed limitations. Across the exhibition, privacy becomes a shared right grounded in trust, autonomy, and self-determination. Dreams operate as both refuge and blueprint: spaces where softer futures can be rehearsed, tenderness and refusal can coexist, and playfulness and frivolity can be embraced as forms of complexity rather than apology.
Rather than presenting a singular vision of utopia, Imagining Otherwise makes room for contradiction, vulnerability, misbehavior, and desire. The exhibition centers interior lives and relational ways of being, inviting us to imagine futures shaped by mutuality, intimacy, and possibility.
We are not “improper.” We are complex, fully human beings, entitled to take up space, assert our presence, and participate in shaping the worlds we want to inhabit.
