After worship on July 19, join art quilter Dorothy Straughter in Buchanan Chapel for an educational and artistic presentation of her work, which documents Black History in fiber arts.

The works convey historical trauma and invite viewers to imagine how those who were traumatized reached for the strength to navigate through the trying times of their day. Trigger warning: some of these quilts contain racist images.

The Black Americana Quilts are extensively researched and presented with interpretations and additional historical information not immediately available to the viewer.

Ms. Straughter’s Art Quilts can be seen at numerous notable venues throughout Chicago, including installations at the Adler Planetarium, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the Art Institute.
