LVL3 is pleased to announce Decrepitude, a three-person show featuring Matt Cobaugh (Chicago, IL), Max Palmer (Brooklyn, NY), and Noelle Whitaker (Seattle, WA).
Decrepitude invokes the modernist ethos embodied in T.S. Eliot’s heap of broken images: to live amongst the ruins and refuse of a broken world is to create new forms, new lifeways, new worlds from its wreckage. Rather than purely imitating or recreating the world they inhabit, Cobaugh, Palmer, and Whitaker each transmutes found and discarded objects into new assemblages of form and material. The spirit of their practices is a life-affirming creativity with which we can navigate an ever-changing social landscape and imagine new ways to resist domination and subjugation.
Cobaugh’s surfaces invest abstract forms with an immense intensity and weight that simultaneously recalls decay and growth. Palmer’s pairing of recovered objects with construction materials interrogates the connections between the city, the body, and the natural world. Whitaker’s works combine a vast array of materials and histories, both personal and parasocial, speaking in a patois suspended between the lived and the digital.
