Ukrainian Film Screening & Fundraiser
@ Co-Prosperity
3219-21 S Morgan St, Chicago, IL 60608
Opening Tuesday, December 19th, from 5:30PM - 10PM
Join us for a film screening and discussion “My Life is Bumfuck Nowhere” on December 19th at 5:30 PM at Co-Prosperity (https://coprosperity.org). We will showcase video works from the Ukrainian artistic collective Freefilmers and engage in a discussion with one of its members, Oksana Kazmina (https://okazmina.xyz). Oksana is a feminist filmmaker, media artist, and performer, with whom we’ll explore the intersections of art, politics, and feminism in the context of the ongoing war. The concept of ‘bumfuck nowhere’, or ‘jebenya’ in Ukrainian, serves as the artists’ way of delineating the peripheral place from which the members of the collective are from – Eastern Ukrainian industrial cities, today occupied or destroyed by the Russian army – where they consciously position themselves today.
Freefilmers is a Mariupol-based collective of Ukrainian filmmakers and artists who have been focusing on the realities of life in Eastern Ukraine since 2014. With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, as their city, Mariupol, was besieged by Russian troops, forcibly displaced members of the community started building a solidarity network. Up until the present day, they organize humanitarian aid for internally displaced people and the Ukrainian army. During the event you’ll be able to buy artists’ merchandise, make silk prints (bring your piece of fabric!!!), and donate to Freefilmers to support their volunteer cause.
