Thursday, October 20th | Austin Town Hall

We begin this Thursday, October 20th, at 12:30 pm connecting with our bodies with family yoga led by Westsider DuShaun Pollard, followed by a 1:15 pm Sound Bath session with Zen Frankie.

From 3:00 – 5:00 pm, Ariel Zetina (she/her) will set the mood at Austin Town Hall Farmers Market. Join us for some good food, great vibes, and local art.

Throughout October, in celebration of the 58th year of the Chicago International Film Festival, 90 features and 60 short films from around the world are being screened in venues around Chicago, including the Shorts 7: Sudden Waves (Black Perspectives) this Thursday at 6:30 pm in the auditorium of Austin Town Hall.

In support and conversation, artist Cai Thomas’s Change the Name film will be projected outside Austin Town Hall from 6 – 8 pm.

Saturday, October 22nd | Closing Ceremony w/ Sojourner Zenobia

This Saturday, October 22nd, from 2-5 pm, join us for the closing of Finding Ceremony. Lite snacks and beverages will be provided.

We are honored to have artist Sojourner Zenobia (They/She) help us close the space with a 3: 00 pm performance at Austin Town Hall.

Sojourner Zenobia is a wood faery incarnate as a Chicago-born multidisciplinary creator. They found spirituality through the practice of presence as an actor. Sojourner has guided hundreds of BIPOC queer folks in deepening their connection with ancestors, nature, and personal spiritual gifts. Sojourner is currently exploring stillness by trusting the wisdom that emerges in their body at quiet moments and trusting the relationships in their life.

Anchor Curatorial Residency presents Finding Ceremony at Austin Town Hall

Curated by: Tiffany M Johnson

Artists:  Janelle Ayana Miller, Kenya Cree, Eseosa Edebiri, Tavia David, Cai Thomas, Antonia “Toni” Ruppert, JaMaa, Alexy Irving, Edna M. Togba, and collaborators Jade Williams and Cristable Reynosa-Martinez of The Black Bloom Project.

FINDING CEREMONY
Inspired by this unique structure, Finding Ceremony will highlight artists from across the city with an emphasis on West and South side cultural production through an art exhibition, performances, and cultural events at Austin Town Hall from September 16th through October 22nd, 2022. Anchor invites a constellation of local talent to build reciprocal relationships with neighbors, local stakeholders, and each other through the collective activation of public parks. Anchor is funded in part by the Walder Foundation, the Builders Initiative, and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE).

A site of refuge and grounding, this inaugural iteration of the Anchor Curatorial Residency investigates present-day geographies of collective anchoring; we invite the local community to explore ways of finding our footing, recharting and reclaiming Black and Brown relations to public spaces and each other.

Finding Ceremony is also proudly designed in collaboration with community stewards Dushaun Branch, Jasmin Graham, Dianna C. Long, and Emone Moore.

ANCHOR CURATORIAL RESIDENCY
We at the Arts & Culture Unit / Chicago Creatives Network are pleased to present The Anchor Curatorial Residency – a funded, itinerant residency for community-based curation practices on Chicago’s South and West sides. Led by 2022 Curator-in-Residence, Tiffany M. Johnson, the inaugural program – Finding Ceremony, examines the tension between safety, care, and (in)visibility of Black and Brown lives in public space. A central tenet of Anchor centers on an inclusive, multidisciplinary approach, “anchored” by a mobile outdoor exhibition and performance venue designed by Walmer Saavedra of Human Scale and fabricated by Andrea Yarbrough of In Care of Black Women.

Hours of Operation: Mon- Fri 11- 7 pm, Sat 11- 5 pm, Closed Sundays
