7:30-8:30pm Pre-show sound installation in the back room
Using a portable Multi-channel Sound System Michael J Schumacher creates spatialized compositions. Building on the pioneering work of composers such as Alvin Lucier and Maryanne Amacher, presentations explore the relationship between musical form and architectural space. Combining installation and performance, algorithmic composition and improvisation, this goes beyond acoustics to the way people inhabit and use spaces, creating paradigms for listening and formal expectations.
8:30 Concert: Michael Schumacher + Quijote Duo
The Chicago based viola-cello duo will immerse itself in the electroacoustic soundscapes created by visiting artist Michael Schumacher. Schumacher and Quijote Duo challenge the notion of listening through utilizing the space sonically, creating sonic relationships between live instruments and electronic works. A unique collaboration of two different sonic media that will delight the most curious mind and ears.
The spaces we inhabit, for living, eating, and all manner of aesthetic experience, have a profound but often subconscious effect on our emotions. The “new frontier” in sound involves the foregrounding of spatial effects through the enlargement of the possible interconnections between sonic events and their encompassing ambience, the exploration of active virtual architectures that, while referring, sometimes, to real places, explode meaning through their constant and unpredictable shifts in aural context.
