Before Potter Palmer built his castle on Lake Shore Drive and established the Gold Coast, Prairie Avenue on the Near South Side was Chicago’s most exclusive address. What began as a dusty lakeside trail became home to seventy-seven millionaires by the 1870s and ’80s, including George Pullman, Marshall Field, John J. Glessner, and Philip Armour. Join professional tour guide Wendy Bright on a visual exploration of the storied prosperity, architecture, and social life of its peak years as well as the precipitous decline of “Millionaire’s Row” in the early twentieth century. The dramatic preservation stories of both the Henry B. Clarke House and John J. Glessner House lead to the historically rich and vibrant neighborhood of today.
