At one time the most successful Brazilian film in history, DONA FLOR is an intoxicating carnival of a movie, full of bright colors, balmy Bahia atmosphere, pulsing Brazilian music (Chico Buarque’s theme song became a disco staple), and steamy softcore sex. An updated ribald folktale based on Jorge Amado’s novel, the story concerns a young widow (Braga, in a sensuous performance that made her an international star) whose first husband (Wilker) drops dead from dissipation. In flashback, we learn that he gambled incessantly, downed rum by the quart, beat his wife, stole her money…and was dynamite in bed. Remarrying, Dona Flor gets the respectable, considerate spouse (Mendonça) she always yearned for, but, much to her horror, she finds her neglected libido calling husband #1 back from the grave. In Portuguese with English subtitles. New 4K DCP digital restoration.
