For the Wild Rabbit
@ Murdertown Gallery
2351 N. Milwaukee Ave
Opening Friday, March 30th, from 6PM - 9PM
On view through Monday, April 30th
“For the Wild Rabbit” hosts a selection of new works by MFA candidates at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, all conceived in direct response to the particularities of the Murdertown space. Curated by Christalena Hughmanick, sculpture, video, installation,
sound and performance converge to create a happening of the sensorial sort. This show seeks without requiring any finding.
Included is one of Capriel’s large sculptures, which he refers to as an ‘existential playground.’ It takes and is taken by the room it occupies; causing one to question where the sculpture ends and the room begins. In close proximity, Michaela Murphy will perform between 7 and 8pm during the opening night reception. Existing somewhere between body, machine, object and performance, her presence will hit you and if she has her way, it may physically hit you. Each of these works succeeds in enlightening its surrounding architecture.
Drawing from her classical training, Katherine Trimble creates compositions using found sound material, overlaid with live cello playing. The collaborative, interactive video installation by Sarah Jones and Troy Briggs will transport the viewer into a panoramic field
of undulating sparks, prismatic fusions, and coded geometries. Experiencing Jones’ videos through personalized viewing mechanisms constructed by Briggs, one is taken to the space between what is sought and what can be found. As in Trimble’s performance as well,
viewers are subtly reminded of the impulse to find.
In Through the Looking Glass, Alice comes upon a shop “that seemed to be full of all manner of curious things – but the oddest part of it all was that whenever she looked hard, at any shelf, to make out exactly what it had on it, that particular shelf was always quite empty, though the others round it were crowded full as they could hold.”
Gallery hours are by appointment only after the opening reception.
