Join Georgina Valverde for a talk with Ken Dunn, Gina Gamboa, and Carolina Macias; three local activists working in the arts, culture, and the environment—as we discuss the importance of craft and manual labor in building vibrant communities.
About the presenters:
Ken Dunn is a pioneer in recycling and the founder of The Resource Center, a non-profit organization in Chicago that promotes environmental education and initiatives, including recycling, urban farming and gardening, and composting.
Gina Gamboa is an advocate of bilingual education and culture. In 2010, along with families, teachers, and artists, she established Son Chiquitos, a collective that works to strengthen the development of Spanish language and children’s cultural identity through music, art and literature.
Carolina Macias is an environmental advocate who has worked with various Chicago based organizations to develop and promote programs linking cultural heritage, health, and climate justice. She currently works for the Metropolitan Planning Council of Chicago.
Georgina Valverde is an artist, educator, and occasional writer. Her work focuses on craft, salvaging, and the transformation of everyday life and materials.
This talk is presented as part of the exhibition “Woven: Connections and Meanings” on view at the National Museum of Mexican Art until April 19, 2020.
