WMG Project Space: Sofía Fernández Díaz

@ Woman Made Gallery

1332 S. Halsted St.

Opening Saturday, October 11th, from 4PM - 7PM

On view through Saturday, November 8th

WMG’s Project Space is a new initiative dedicated to experimentation, process, and dialogue. Unlike formal gallery shows, the Project Space invites artists to share unfinished ideas, evolving works, and interactive components that encourage visitor participation. It is a place where art is not only seen but also experienced as a living conversation between artist and audience.

Our second featured Project Space artist is Sofía Fernández Díaz.

Sofía Fernández Díaz’s practice explores the relationships between materiality, memory, and environment. Through an intuitive approach that blends traditional and contemporary techniques, she investigates the hidden connections between organic and industrial processes, working with fibers, natural dyes, beeswax, and found materials to create tactile narratives of transformation and decay.

In this exhibition, Sofía Fernández Díaz shares source objects, material explorations, and works significant to her practice. Like conceptual touchstones, these disparate objects and materials reveal undercurrents running through her work. Their non-linear presentation puts forward the artist’s context of making and allows for viewers to explore otherwise unseen processes, inspirations, and connections.

This format of presentation is especially valuable to working artists and students as it invites a level of access rarely offered. Woman Made Gallery is a space to not only uplift and celebrate the works of female-identifying and non-binary artists, but to give resources and create a community of support.

Project Space: Sofía Fernández Díaz will exhibit in tandem with Finding My Way, an exhibition of works from IL & IN students and recent graduates curated by Rebekah Baker, Corinne Pompey, and Diana Vallera.

Gallery Hours:
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 12-5PM

WMG’s Project Space is curated by Rebekah Baker, Gallery Director.
