Opening Reception: this is this & that is that & the twain did meet
Jose Rizal once said about colonization “they gave up their writing, their songs, their poems, their laws in order to learn by rote mother doctrines which they did not understand, another morality, another aesthetics different from those inspired by their climate and their manner of thinking.” This exhibition draws inspiration from this quote and looks to recapture the narratives lost through newly created artworks by James Bulosan utilizing clay and mixed media. The artwork attempts to create speculative archives by reclaiming “aesthetics” through materiality, form, color and symbolism. Pulling from historically familiar archetypes, the works will act as points of engagement to produce new meaning for Filipino futures. Along with the exhibition will be a living piece that captures cultural narratives through preserving and archiving shared stories from audience members documented through post cards.
