Octavia Butler’s – The Evening the Morning and the Night

Join us for a powerful afternoon of art, movement, and imagination in honor of Octavia E. Butler’s 78th birthday.
Front Porch Arts Center presents a dramatized reading of Butler’s short story The Evening, the Morning and the Night, featuring Makeba Kedem DuBose and interpretive movement by Sunshine Lombre. The event will take place on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Front Porch Arts Center, 5851 W. Madison St., Chicago.
This multidisciplinary performance is curated by Front Porch’s resident artist David Boykin, who will also close the afternoon with a live set as his hip-hop beatmaker persona, Dr. Belsidus. A short artist talk and discussion will follow the reading.
About the Artists
David Boykin is a groundbreaking musician, composer, and multidisciplinary artist, celebrated as a leading figure in Chicago’s creative music scene. With more than 20 albums released and global performances under his belt, Boykin’s artistry spans avant-garde jazz, afro-electronic soul, hip-hop, and conceptual performance. He creates through multiple personas—including Dr. Belsidus, Abeeku, and Dark Mery—and is the founder of Sonic Healing Ministries.
Makeba Kedem DuBose is a Chicago-based multidisciplinary artist and curator whose work has been exhibited alongside the likes of Dr. Margaret Burroughs, Kehinde Wiley, and Richard Hunt. A career artist, DuBose’s pieces have been featured internationally and across platforms including artYop.com, The Color of Art film, and various literary publications. Her work has also appeared in Woman’s Day, Drum (London), and other major outlets.
Sunshine Lombre is a Chicago-born dancer and poet who blends sensuality and emotional authenticity through movement and spoken word. Known for her dynamic performances and seasonal artist showcases centered on Black heritage, she teaches creative writing with organizations like Poetry for Personal Power, the Chicago Public Library, and Hyde Park Art Center. Her debut poetry album Fading Away has earned acclaim, and she’s shared stages with legends like Twista and Parliament Funkadelic.
