Seen and Unseen
@ The Plan
610 N Albany Ave, Chicago, IL 60612
Opening Friday, May 16th, from 6PM - 10PM
On view through Sunday, June 29th
If we are to call the United States our country and this land we now call Chicago the guiding hand on our shoulder, everything that has raised and nourished us; everything we have loved, then we cannot extricate ourselves from what we create within it. Seen & Unseen screens the work of three local filmmakers and shows seven artists in response that use unique methods to approach the distillation of time within a frame, and invariably reveal what lies just beyond it. What is not seen, but drawn upon leaves a trace still present in the material of the work itself.
The question then is not what is unknown, but what is ongoing. What happens when we apply the language of film to visual works which don’t strictly conform to their medium of choice (what is it that separates collage from montage, or a film stills from still image?) The aim of this exhibition is to disturb the white cube by removing the boundary between gallery space and cinema, and thereby complicate what is spectator, and what is spectacle.
I
nnovation in filmmaking, as mirrored by every capitalist industry, does not as-promised level the field but rather, directs it away from any kind of deep or substantial cultural engagement. Seen & Unseen challenges the viewer to engage with the difficult and complicated labor that goes into seeing beyond these rigidly applied historical parameters which quietly work to segregate thought, and calls in a community of diverse artists currently working in our city.
