Opening Friday, May 23rd, at 7PM
This event has been canceled.
Sweet Void Cinema presents their first program since the loss of their homegrown microtheater in Humboldt Park. This screening features a curated selection of short films that offer a snapshot of what local filmmakers have been working on, showcasing the creative spirit still thriving in the community.
After the screenings, there will be a conversation with the directors, focusing on the challenges faced with the previous theater space, the resources local filmmakers need to create and sustain their work, and how a distinctive Chicago voice and culture can continue to grow.
THE FILMS
Program A – Total Runtime 60 mins
On Liberalism (Charli Christine Marker, 21 mins)
A meditation on the director’s relative complacency in the ongoing genocide of Palestinians, and how she got to the point of questioning her leftist identity.
HORANGI (Lynn Kim, 7 mins)
HORANGI is an animated film based on a dream where I arose to find myself in a field of tigers. The film seeks to capture the feelings of fear, admiration, conflict and similarity between the tiger and myself, and envisions what kind of tenuous harmony we might find together.
Double A (Dylan Maris, 12 mins)
Audrey and Alondra are Double A, a pair of longtime friends who run a radio show as DePaul undergrads. The film portraits their relationship on a September night in Chicago.
NO SIRENS.NO FLASH.NOBODY. (Aitana Benitez, 7 mins)
A documentary about girlhood and agency. A poem based on a shotlist and recreated stills of a movie I never made.
Paper Bubble Gum (Jay Villalobos, 13 mins)
A girl reflects on a past friendship and wonders if it meant anything.
Program B – Total Runtime 48 mins
A new reality (Sage Ó Tuama, 5 mins)
Recent past warped as a youtuber explains how to create a new reality.
L’ailier (Alexandra Karelina, 5 mins)
“For a very long time, i couldn’t shake the feeling that this was a dream,” she said. But even they, enjoying the beautiful park, hardly notice the planes roaring overhead from a nearby military base.
Sabbatical (Jack McCoy, 12 mins)
A diary film comprised of images from 2024 and voicemails from 2011-2016.
ALLEYWAYS (Craig J Hard, 9 mins)
Another installment in the Architectural Series. An absurd short film. A mummy and an invisible man, two movie tropes, chide and criticize the modern movie-going experience. One long meta take meandering through an alley; my favorite genre film: the film within a film, movies about making movies.
Pizza Delivery (Jack Warner, 9 mins)
Chilling in my bedroom, watching Roller Coaster Tycoon lets plays.
Leisurely Pastimes (Nicholas Swanton, 8 mins)
A human drama unfolds over every chessboard.
