WHIM Chicago, an eclectic event venue where art forms converge—paintings, music, sculpture, street art, and live performance—presents MOTHERHOOD, a poignant exhibition by Chicago-based photographer Isa Gonzalez. This exhibition offers an intimate, surprising portrayal of motherhood, captured through Gonzalez’s lens. Her work, characterized by saturated colors, spans from whimsical and child-like to raw and grief-filled, reflecting the complex and multifaceted nature of motherhood.

As a nonprofit committed to supporting local artists, WHIM Chicago continues its mission by showcasing Chicago-based visual artists in its dedicated gallery space. In MOTHERHOOD, flowers are thoughtfully suspended down the center of the gallery to symbolize Mothers. Flowers provide sustenance and care, foster new life, and contribute to the well-being of their environment. Gonzalez’s work is deeply personal, featuring herself, her children, and loved ones as subjects, and invites viewers to explore motherhood from various perspectives.

“When other mothers see this exhibition, I want them to feel recognized and encouraged to discuss the often-hidden aspects of motherhood,” Gonzalez shares. “For those who aren’t mothers, I hope this offers a deeper understanding and appreciation of the mothers in their lives.”

Gonzalez, who became a mother to twins at 21, describes them as her entire world.
MOTHERHOOD is organized by WHIM at Stage 773, and curated by Anne Shook.

The opening reception is September 7, 2024, at 7:00 PM.
