Elena Morone and Kimma Dennis

Two female artists from war-torn countries come together to exhibit new works under one roof at Art City.

Kimmah Dennis hails from Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, the capital of the Ivory Coast in west Africa. She was born in 1996, emerging from the crucible of the First Liberian Civil War. Her artwork is deeply rooted in a legacy of displacement and harrowing stories of survival, and she embraces a fusion of mediums such as painting, drawing, collage, photography, and installation. According to the artist, the “materials in my art transcend mere expression; they are chosen for their potential to construct meaning that reverberate beyond visual aesthetics.” Dennis is currently pursuing her MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has won numerous awards including the 2024-25 Terra Foundation affiliated Rome Prize Fellowship.

Elena Morone was born in Buenos Aires and began art school in 1976. Her formal education was interrupted by the Argentine coup d’état which overthrew the president and was replaced by a military junta. Eventually Morone immigrated to the United States, and in 2014, a friend invited her to a Groupon class at the Chicago Mosaic School – one of the only mosaic schools outside of Europe. This was a life-changer for her, and she started taking classes full-time. Her technique employs smalti (thick colored glass), broken glass, pebbles, stones, slate, which is cut into pieces called tesserae. The tesserae are arranged in a pattern called Andamento, the Spanish meaning of the word means, “to go.” In this context, Andamento describes the way the tesserae “walks” in winding paths on the mosaic mortar.

This exhibition will take place at Art City located at 1400 N. Halsted Street in Chicago from May 23 – June 20, 2024. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 23, 5-8 pm. Free and open to the public.
