Noah Hook: YOU MAY NOT SEE ME

@ Art City

1400 N Halsted St, Chicago, IL 60642

Opening Saturday, January 13th, from 4PM - 7PM

On view through Tuesday, February 13th

YOU MAY NOT SEE ME brings together a collection of works related to the body, landscape, and bodies of water. Painting, sculpture, costume, and photography intermingle to form the visage of a collapsing, mutating, evolving American landscape. The space is scattered with maritime and coastal objects related to acts of consumption, entrapment, protection, and fortification. Evidence of dilapidation, sedimentation, erosion, and other accumulations of filth can be found within the works, laying their working class roots bare within the gallery’s white walls. Elements of body horror, camp, kink, monstrosity, invisibility, and hypervisibility create complicated relationships between the objects, as they attempt to harm, support, and love each other.

Noah Hook is an interdisciplinary artist from White Stone, Virginia. He currently lives and works in Chicago, Illinois, where he is pursuing an MFA in Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work explores the ways pride and shame, privilege and disempowerment, growth and stagnancy, and faith and fear intertwine to affect people, populations, and the places they inhabit. With subjects such as whiteness, masculinity, sexuality, poverty, heritage, and violence at the forefront of my analysis; Hook examines dynamics of power in order to articulate ideas around identity, grief, and resilience.
