Colossal is thrilled to welcome artist Ýr Jóhannsdóttir, better known as Ýrúrarí, for a virtual workshop. During this one-hour session, Ýrúrarí will offer insight into her process and teach the needle-felting technique she often uses in her creative mending projects that transform sweaters into friends. The techniques are suitable for complete beginners, just grab a needle and some wool and join in.

All Colossal Workshops are recorded, so if you can’t make it day of, no worries. We’ll send out the video to everyone afterward.

About Ýrúrarí

Ýr Jóhannsdóttir is a textile designer from Iceland, based in Berlin and Reykjavík, working under the name Ýrúrarí. Through her work, she combines humour and the everyday in woolen wearable pieces, playing with the thin line between costumes and casual wear. For the past years, the importance of sustainability has impacted Ýrúrarí’s work, leading to a practice where damaged second-hand sweaters gain a new unique look with carefully handmade decorations and mending. In 2020, Ýrúrarí’s first line of upcycled sweaters, Sweater Sauce, got nominated for the Icelandic design awards. The Sweater Sauce project evolved into creative visible mending workshops where people can personalize and play with approachable mending techniques on their knits. The workshops have since taken place all over Europe.
