Bouncy House
@ Bridgeport Art Center, Project Onward
1200 W 35th St Chicago, IL 60609
Opening Friday, September 15th, from 6PM - 9PM
On view through Friday, November 3rd
Bouncy House isn’t just an exhibition; it’s a visual conversation, and, above all, a party! In this experimental show, you’ll witness the exchange between two dynamic artists, Sheila Smith (b. 1968) and NoonSlaps (b. 1994), coming together in a blast of vibrant color.
Noon’s art gravitates towards cellular forms, giving life to irregular shapes adorned with intricate linework. Meanwhile, Sheila Smith finds her center in humble dots, which she repeats and layers into hypnotic landscapes of waves, swirls, and splashes.
To create this project, Sheila and Noon engaged in a creative dialogue for two exhilarating weeks, allowing their shapes and colors to dance and collide. These pieces evolved as they passed between the artists, each layer adding to the whole scene’s depth.
This collaboration bridges both generational and cultural gaps, since Sheila and Noon hail from strikingly different backgrounds. Yet their differences become irrelevant when they come together, their work harmonizes as they bounce off one another. As Noon puts it, “When I get a Sheila piece, I feel like I need to marry our work. I need to put myself in her shoes – what was she thinking when she put down certain marks?” For both artists, painting creates a world beyond words, a “Bouncy House” for play and connection.
Don’t miss this immersive celebration where color breaks free from canvases and frames, transforming every inch of our gallery like never before. Make sure to mark your calendar for the opening reception on Friday, September 15th from 6-9 pm. See you there!
