Performances from Alumni Hyde Park Art Center Resident Artists: Ariella Granados & Bun Stout

Ariella Granados is an interdisciplinary artist based in Chicago working through performance, video, sound, and creative direction. Granados’ work explores childhood, telenovelas, and internet subculture across media. Drawing from personal memory, her multimedia videos depict familial and medical trauma embedded through the creation of fictional characters that portray real lived experiences as a bicultural and disabled body. Using makeup, found images, sound, and video performance, she manipulates language, truth, and personal memory to create videos that are absurd, humorous, and sentimental. Granados manipulates her disabled body through makeup and garb to become characters that play with fiction and truth. Playing with ideas of truth and fiction similar to Latinx soap operas and advertisements she creates a liminal space between fiction and truth that replays her bicultural liminal state. Granados’ work is intertwined with the consumer’s inability to not fully be satisfied with the consumption of commodities in media advertisements etc.

Bun Stout is an Indianapolis-born, Chicago-based artist. Their multidisciplinary artwork mostly lives within queer nightlife, the bus there and back, and personal spaces of their collaborators. Their practice unites physical and digital media to tell stories about imaginary futures and catalyze brief experiences of transformation. The resulting artworks are wearable augmented reality sculpture, collaborative editorials and the lived experiences of the wearers themselves.

Stout has spoken about their work at the Kinsey Institute and is a recipient of the Southern Graphics Council International Undergraduate Fellowship. Exhibitions include interactive installations at Soho House Chicago, the Cucalorus Film Festival, Ars Electronica and a solo exhibition at the Pacific Northwest College of Art. They hold a BFA in Printmaking from Indiana University and an MFA in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Performances curated by Artist Run Chicago space, Defibrillator from Gage Sixkiller & Aza Greenlee

Gage Sixkiller is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and currently resides on the unceded homelands of the Council of the Three Fires: the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations (Chicago, IL.) They are a conceptual artist and cultural producer who works in the mediums of painting, sculpture, installation, and durational performance. Their work confronts social convention through gender exploration and confrontation, critical examination of color and space, and a journey of self discovery and experience through creation.

Aza Greenlee is a body artist and co-conspirator at No Nation Tangential Unspace Art Lab. This coalescence is one to galavant in dreamscapes, ancestral juke joints, chaturbate masturbation web temples, loose-tooth tanks, and The Heartspace. They organize “Smudge Cinema Project”, a now-and-then-wait-when? screening series that takes a look at what happens when a film is projected on a wall for people to watch. Metabolization seems to be what they appear to do, lately.

Defibrillator Gallery is a nonprofit arts organization formed in 2010 as an international platform for Performance Art in Chicago. Our bold and courageous programming aims to provoke thought and stimulate discourse surrounding underrepresented voices and conceptual practices. DFBRL8R is dedicated to invigorating Chicago with artists of exceptional caliber from around the world. Actively contributing to global dialogues surrounding conceptual, ephemeral, or enigmatic forms of expression, Defibrillator champions artists and audiences who are diverse in their culture, identities, worldview, and all those who are invested in alternative modes of being in society. Energetically building community and fostering discourse, DFBRL8R has a mission to raise awareness, appreciation, and respect for the discipline of Performance Art.

DJs sets from DJ Dapper & Jared Brown

DJ Dapper [Jae Rice] is a trans-masculine public figure, activist, and abolitionist fighting for the liberation of oppressed communities on a daily basis. Jae is the Interim CEO at Brave Space Alliance. He is also a cultural curator, international DJ, composer, and overall practitioner of freedom, joy and justice. His background in political science and intercultural communications shapes his dedication to the progress of all Black LGBTQIA+ folks and other marginalized groups through perpetuating on-the-ground societal shifts, advancements, cultural change and growth. This dedication can be seen and holistically felt through over a decade of creating intentional spaces that center all Black LGBTQIA+ women, femmes, TGNC, and queer folks in Chicago, and around the world. Jae continues to foster an equitable future and moves intentionally towards a collectively liberated society.

Jared Brown is an interdisciplinary artist born in Chicago. In past work, Jared broadcasted audio and text based work through the radio (CENTRAL AIR RADIO, 88.5 FM), in live DJ sets, and on social media. They consider themselves a data thief, understanding this role from John Akomfrah’s description of the data thief as a figure that does not belong to the past or present. As a data thief, Jared Brown makes archeological digs for fragments of Black American subculture, history and technology. Jared repurposes these fragments in audio, text, and video to investigate the relationship between history and digital, immaterial space. Jared Brown holds a BFA in video from the Maryland Institute College of Art and moved back to Chicago in 2016 in order to make and share work that directly relates to their personal history.

Brave Space Alliance

Brave Space Alliance (BSA) is the first Black-led, trans-led LGBTQ Center located on the South Side of Chicago at 1515 E 52nd Place, Third Floor. BSA is dedicated to creating and providing affirming, culturally competent, for-us by-us resources, programming, and services for LGBTQ individuals on the South and West sides of the city. We strive to empower, embolden, and educate each other through mutual aid, knowledge-sharing, and the creation of community-sourced resources as we build toward the liberation of all oppressed peoples.”
