Growing out of a sketchbook practice of generating characters for comics, “Casting Call” brings an overabundant parade of hallucinatory dramatis personae onto the wall at Mana Contemporary Chicago: apparitions, eidolons, phantoms, chimeras, creeps, creatures, monsters, misremembered mascots, wraiths, sigils, shadows, ciphers, and shades to emerge, dance, prance, cower, caper, crawl, fall, flee, romp, retreat, scamper and stumble into and across the picture plane. Equal parts drawing, writing, and improvisational acting, this undulating grid of drawings engages with the associations of graphite as the material of the plan, sketch, outline and, most importantly, the cartoon.
Conor Stechschulte is a cartoonist and screenwriter whose work investigates the outlines of human identity, the malleability of memory and the unstable nature of our perceptions. He is the author most recently of the graphic novel Ultrasound published by Fantagraphics, along with dozens of self-published comics. He adapted Ultrasound into the screenplay for a feature film directed by Rob Schroeder and released by Magnolia Films in March of 2022. He has exhibited his work internationally and published with Breakdown Press in London, Colorama Press in Berlin and Edizioni 001 in Milan, among others. He lives in Berwyn, IL and teaches classes in comics, printmaking and self-publishing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
“Mind Map” is a bi-monthly program that invites Chicago-based artists to create a time-based and site-specific work that shows the artists’ processes. Mind Map looks into the artist’s creative process. With graphite, artists are invited to work on the wall located inside the cafe, reflecting their ideas for two weeks. The exhibition lasts for a month and a half.
