Old Traditions, New Narratives: South Asian Miniatures.
@ South Asia Institute
1925 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60616
Opening Thursday, September 17th, from 11am - 6PM
On view through Friday, December 18th
Traditional South Asian miniature painting was all but lost in the 19th century, due to a lack of imperial patronage precipitated by the intrusion of the British Colonialism. Reintroduced and transformed initially at the National College of Art in Lahore, Pakistan, and later in India, the UK and the USA, the style has evolved from the strict traditional format to an unconstrained representation of contemporary themes.
Artists who have trained in the traditional techniques have reclaimed the art in unique and personal ways.
This exhibition features works by the significant artists who comprise an international movement of contemporary miniature painting.
Thursday – Saturday, 11am – 6pm
